為多年生浮葉型草本植物，地下有肥厚的黃色塊莖，葉為長橢圓形或闊卵形，漂浮於水面，基部為心形，全緣，邊緣有一缺刻深裂至中央，上表面光滑，下表面長有毛，花單出，花梗粗壯且長，挺出水面，花冠為杯形，花瓣退化，萼片4至6枚，黃色，像花瓣般顯著，花期在夏至秋季，果實為漿果，卵圓形。
為台灣特有的浮葉性水生植物，分布於台灣中、北部沼澤或池塘中，由於沼澤或水池大量減少，現今，只在桃園一帶少數水池中尚可發現野生族群。由於花色顯目，被種植於大型水盆或水池作為觀賞用。
