特徵

沉積物的顆粒<1/256mm，礦物顆粒非常細小，所以肉眼無法辨識，觸摸時沒有粒感。

頁岩的顏色一般為青灰色到黑色。

 

辨識重點

像書頁般的薄層，容易碎裂。

 

 

野外觀察

頁岩比較脆弱，容易崩解或被侵蝕風化，經常形成凹谷、河流、海灣。頁岩時常和砂岩形成砂頁岩互層。
