常綠小灌木，有多數分枝，長短不一，新生枝條為綠色，成纖細四角柱狀，老枝圓柱形，淡土黃色，有不規則龜裂狀，葉對生，披針狀長橢圓形至倒披針形，兩面光滑無毛，葉先端凹入，全緣，革質，花單性，花序腋生或頂生，雌雄同株，花密集排列成頭狀，每一花序頂端有1片雌花，雄花數片生長於下方，都無花瓣，果期在秋季8至10月，蒴果，近球形，在台灣很少會結果實。
常種植為綠籬或盆栽，作為觀賞樹木或美化庭園；葉和樹皮有毒；木材淡黃或黃色，材質緻密，不易割裂，常被用來作為雕刻材、印章材及樂器，也可製作木梳。
