常綠大喬木，株高10至15公尺，全株含有乳汁，葉片極大，葉互生，葉厚紙質，正面或反面光滑，葉脈明顯，肥厚質地如紙卵狀，長橢圓形或廣卵形、闊卵形，全緣，深綠色，葉形前端比較尖銳，底部略呈心形，羽狀深裂的葉子，呈深綠色，富有光澤，在4至6月開花，雌雄同株，花小不具觀花效果，花單生，單性聚合花，同株異花，雄花呈棍棒狀，雄花小穗狀花序，雌花花序生於雄花序上端，雌花球狀，複合果球，肥大肉質狀，早期黃綠色，成熟轉為黃色，種子包藏於紅色假種皮之內，果肉呈白色，海棉質，富含纖維素及澱粉，可以熟食，成熟時會從樹上掉落，每粒果實的種子約30至80粒，藏於果肉中。
樹冠傘狀、葉大、濃綠色、遮蔭效果甚佳，為優良觀賞庭園樹，但花小，不具有觀花效果；可種植為庭園樹、遮蔭樹、行道樹、防塵樹；成熟果實可煮排骨湯、炒蛋；果實內有油質，熟果燒烤食用散發麵包香，是南洋主要澱粉食物；木材輕軟而粗，具有耐白蟻和海蟲的特性，可供建築，海島居民以此為獨木舟。
