體型為小型，體型為扁狀，細長，體色為褐色，有鱗片，觸角為細長絲狀，有3條尾毛，中間的較長，是比較原始的昆蟲。。
分布於低中海拔山區，常見於潮濕的苔蘚、枯木或岩石縫隙、樹皮或落葉裡，以腐植質為食。生活史為卵→仔蟲→成蟲，屬於無變態昆蟲。
