成蟲體型為中型，體長約13~24mm，身體狹長有些扁，體色為黃褐色，有些帶有黑褐色光澤。頭部扁平，有複眼及單眼兩個分布於兩複眼之間。前胸背板上下緣有黑色邊，有3條細縱向紋，各腳為淡黃褐色。
分布於低中海拔山區各河川中上游的溪流環境，稚蟲生活於流動的溪流中，而成蟲則生活在陸地上。稚蟲生活在沒有污染的水域，因此山區溪流旁，比較能發現成蟲的身蹤。生活史為卵→稚蟲→亞成蟲→ 成蟲，屬於半形變態昆蟲。稚蟲身體特化成扁平狀，以減少水流阻力，而其肢腳的末端具有爪，可幫助吸附於岩石上。為肉食性。夜晚具趨光性。成蟲在水邊附近交尾，雌蟲產卵於水邊，產卵數達數千粒，呈塊狀。成蟲羽化後在水邊植物間活動，入夜後會被誘到燈下。
