體型為中型，展翅約5.5~6.5公分。翅膀表面為暗褐色，翅膀腹面底色為褐色，翅緣有不明顯的白色斑紋，後翅具有2個眼紋，下翅具有1個眼紋，較不清楚。雄蝶體型較小，後翅後緣沒有像雌蝶的突起，較為圓滑，前翅背面的斑紋較少。
民國八十七年入侵台灣的為外來種蝶種，在平地至低海拔山區的竹林很容易觀察到，已成為竹林內的優勢蝶種。成蝶喜歡在晨昏時刻活動，不愛訪花吸蜜，喜愛吸食樹液及腐果。繁殖力很強，母蝶每次產下蝶卵可多達一百多粒。幼蟲食草為禾本科的綠竹及金絲竹，幼蟲孵化後群聚生活，啃食竹葉，造成竹林危害。有群聚的習性。
